Revolutionizing EV Charging: UAE Implements New Regulations

May 15, 2023 News & Updates PitStopArabia

Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, the Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, has announced that the ministry is currently conducting research to develop new legislation aimed at improving the electric vehicle (EV) charging station infrastructure in the UAE. The objective is to reduce charging time while maintaining high efficiency and affordable pricing.

Speaking at the ongoing World Utilities Conference 2023, the minister revealed that there are currently around 500 EV charging stations spread across the nation, with plans to increase this number to 800 in the coming years.

In early 2023, Adnoc Distribution made an agreement to form a mobility joint venture known as E2GO, partnering with Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA). This partnership aims to construct and operate EV infrastructure in Abu Dhabi and across the UAE. The demand for EVs is predicted to grow by 30 percent annually until 2028.

The UAE's EV market is experiencing exponential growth, with an estimated need for 70,000 charging points in Abu Dhabi alone by 2030, in order to meet the rising demand for electric vehicles. Al Mazrouei emphasized that the UAE possesses cutting-edge transportation and distribution networks that rank among the most advanced globally.

Dubai's Green Charger Initiative

In February, the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy (DSCE) reviewed the progress of the Green Charger Initiative and decided to expand the network of electric charging stations in Dubai. The initiative, launched by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa), aims to increase the number of electric car charging stations and support the adoption of environmentally-friendly vehicles throughout the emirate. Dewa stated that the initiative has achieved remarkable success thus far.

By the end of 2022, the number of green chargers in Dubai reached 350, providing over 620 charging points. This initiative has had a significant impact on the growth of electric and hybrid vehicles, as the number of EVs rose to 15,100, while hybrid vehicles reached 13,500 by the end of the same year.

Dubai Taxi Corporation Collaborates with BluWave-ai

In April, the Dubai Taxi Corporation (DTC) signed a partnership agreement with BluWave-ai, a Canadian artificial intelligence (AI) company, to explore methods and practices for transforming taxis into eco-friendly vehicles at a minimal cost. The aim is to promote the adoption of electric vehicles while ensuring a sustainable transportation system.

The Dubai Road and Transport Authority (RTA) has set a goal to convert all taxis in Dubai into 100 percent eco-friendly vehicles (including hybrids, electric cars, and hydrogen-powered vehicles) by 2027. This ambitious plan aligns with the city's commitment to creating an environmentally-conscious and technologically advanced transportation sector.
