12,000+ Dubai Drivers Fined for Phone Use While Driving
Dubai Traffic police has issued tickets to more than 12,000 motorists for using their mobile phones while driving. Police officials reported that the figure has decreased almost a quarter compared to the same period last year.
Colonel Jumaa Salem Bin Suweidan, deputy head of Dubai Traffic Police, said that police has issued 12,257 traffic fines to distracted drivers explicitly using mobile phones from January till March this year.
We can see a considerable decrease in the figure as in the same bracket last year 16,090 fines were issued for the same offence. This year, however, the average has decreased from 178 fines per day to 136 fines issued per day.
Apart from Dh800 fines, the motorists were also given four black points on their driving licenses. The fine was increased from Dh200 after the Federal Traffic Law was updated on July 1 last year. The Police department is of the view that the new amount has proved to be more effective as we have seen a considerable decrease in the offence.
However, more and more trainings and awareness campaigns must be launched to spread the awareness about the dangers of using cell phones while driving.
