Mercedes-Benz Plans to Lunch New Junior G-Class in 2026-2027
The company is planning an electric and combustion-engine SUV inspired by the G-Class as a flagship for its new line of entry-level luxury models. It will sit on the same Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA) platform as the Mercedes-Benz CLA to be powered and arrive with a choice of ICE and EV power options. On the other hand, the full-size EQG will utilize a reworked version of the ladder-frame chassis of the existing combustion car.
The newly proposed SUV is currently being considered by Mercedes and if it gets launched then would be Mereceds fifth 'Entry Luxury' model, joining four other models being launched over the next three years.
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class would also give Mercedes a foothold in a growing rugged crossover market that includes the Jeep Avenger, Mini Aceman, and Ford's MEB-based electric crossover. Furthermore, it would help Mercedes establish ‘G’ as a Mercedes sub-brand in the same vein as Maybach and AMG, leveraging Land Rover Defender's success.
Last year, CEO Ola Källenius said: “Most luxury companies build their portfolio based on one or two real icons. Mercedes-Benz is fortunate to have some recognizable goods and brands at the top of its lineup, including the S-Class, SL, and G-Class, as well as the AMG and Maybach brands.
Here, we see a tremendous opportunity to add even more intriguing goods to our top-end inventory.” His remarks imply that each of those four brands may eventually provide more extensive line-ups.
Just like the upcoming CLA, the new compact SUV would have an 800V architecture to offer 10-80 % battery top-up within 30 minutes from a 350kW charger.
It's expected to have a range far exceeding conventionally powered counterparts because of a new silicon-anode battery, whose capacity is expected to reach 100kWh. It won't, however, come close to the 700-mile range of the slick EQXX design due to its upright size.
Despite the possibility of offering a mild-hybrid combustion engine, Mercedes may opt against this in some markets. According to Emmerich Schiller, “The new 'G' sub-brand is aimed at providing electric vehicles with “unparalleled luxury and off-road ability”.
