Google Maps' Eco-Friendly Routes: Fuel-Efficient Directions

Sep 07, 2022 News & Updates PitStopArabia

Now, if you specify your engine type, google maps can provide the “most fuel-efficient route” possible to your destination. This eco-friendly routing feature is coming to all of Europe. It has been launched on google maps at the start of this year for the United States (US), Canada, and Germany to get the specified directions that use less fuel.

In case, if the arrival times are similar, then the app will show a "Most fuel-efficient" badge and will choose that route. Further, the app provides a piece of brief information about why that route is preferred.

It is possible to disable this feature from the overflow menu on the directions page by clicking on the "Route options" to always use the fastest route. This eco-friendly route feature is used to save money on fuel and reduce carbon emissions. Starting today, the eco-friendly route has been introduced to nearly 40 countries across Europe.

Moreover, as we said earlier, you can get even more fuel-efficient eco-friendly routing from google maps by specifying your engine type which includes gas or petrol, diesel, hybrid, or electric vehicle (EV).

According to Google, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy and the European Environment Agency data were used to get the “most accurate fuel efficiency estimates”. The company used these data, combined with driving trends from Google Maps, to develop “advanced machine learning models” based on popular engine types in a particular region.
