Dubai Embarks on Cutting-Edge Trials of Volvo, VDL, and Daimler's Futuristic Electric and Hydrogen-Powered Buses

Jun 25, 2023 News & Updates PitStopArabia

Dubai, known for its grandeur and innovation, is now gearing up to revolutionize its public transportation system with a focus on sustainability. Recently, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai signed three groundbreaking collaboration partnerships with renowned bus manufacturers to test new types of electric and hydrogen-powered buses. The partnerships were announced during the 64th UITP Global Public Transport Summit held in Barcelona, Spain, earlier this month.

The signing ceremony, witnessed by Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, marked a significant step towards achieving Dubai's vision of becoming a more eco-friendly and carbon-free city by 2050. The agreements were signed by German firm Daimler Buses, Swedish automaker Volvo, and Dutch company VDL.

The first agreement with Daimler Buses paves the way for the testing of a pioneering bus, powered by both electricity and hydrogen fuel. This ambitious endeavor aims to evaluate the bus's feasibility and performance under Dubai's unique climatic conditions. It will be the first-of-its-kind initiative in the Middle East, following the successful trials in Europe. The outcome of this innovative experiment holds the promise of a sustainable and green future for public transportation in the emirate.

Building on the successful collaboration, the second agreement with Volvo initiates Phase II of testing Volvo's electric buses. This phase involves deploying these electric buses in Dubai's operational conditions, taking into account the challenging climate of the United Arab Emirates. By partnering with Volvo, the RTA envisions transforming Dubai's mobility landscape into a more sustainable one, aligned with the city's long-term environmental goals.

The third agreement solidifies the strategic alliance between RTA and VDL, with the primary objective of knowledge sharing and experience exchange in managing and operating electric buses. This partnership will facilitate workshops, visits, and an in-depth understanding of the latest international practices in electric bus depots. The insights gained will enable the RTA to establish depots with the necessary infrastructure for future electric bus operations, ensuring an integrated system for environmentally friendly mass transit while prioritizing safety, convenience, and sustainability.

The collaboration agreements reflect RTA's dedication to finding innovative transport solutions through private-sector engagement. Ahmed Bahrozyan, CEO of the Public Transport Agency, RTA, expressed his pride in signing these strategic collaborations with internationally renowned companies specializing in sustainable transport and public bus production. He emphasized the commitment to transition all mass transportation modes into eco-friendly and carbon-free options by 2050.

The partnerships have also garnered enthusiasm from the bus manufacturers. Dan Pettersson, Senior Vice President of the Business Unit Chassis at Volvo Bus Corporation, emphasized their long-standing cooperation with RTA and the shared objective of introducing revolutionary technologies to Dubai's public transport. He highlighted the importance of developing a comprehensive transportation system with the most modern and innovative technology available to achieve Dubai's carbon emissions reduction goals by 2030.

Richard van den Dungen, Chief Commercial Officer at VDL Bus & Coach, expressed delight in collaborating with RTA, citing their extensive experience as a European frontrunner in electric mobility. The expertise gained from the transition to zero-emission operations in Europe can be valuable for analyzing and implementing sustainable mobility solutions in the UAE region.

As Dubai embarks on this ambitious journey towards a greener and more sustainable future, the partnerships with Daimler Buses, Volvo, and VDL are set to launch the emirate's public transportation system into a new era. With a focus on electric and hydrogen-powered buses, Dubai is making significant strides in redefining urban mobility and becoming a global role model for sustainable transportation.
