Abu Dhabi's Public Transport Sees 23% Growth: Over 85 Million Journeys in First Half of Year
Abu Dhabi's Department of Municipalities and Transport released figures last week, revealing an impressive surge in public transport usage during the first six months of the year. According to the data, more than 85 million journeys were made using public transport, marking a remarkable 23 percent increase compared to the same period in 2022.
The statistics showcased the growing popularity of public transport in the region, with people opting for 43.7 million taxi trips and 39.4 million public bus journeys. Shared transport, including rental vehicles, accounted for 2.4 million journeys, as reported by the Department of Municipalities and Transport.
This significant rise in public transport usage is seen as a testament to the efficiency and effectiveness of Abu Dhabi's public transport infrastructure, with the Abu Dhabi Media Office emphasizing its success.
In an ambitious move towards environmental sustainability, Abu Dhabi authorities have been actively collaborating with nationwide efforts to enhance public transport services. The ultimate goal is to alleviate traffic congestion by reducing the number of private cars on the roads and minimizing harmful emissions.
One initiative introduced in January 2021 included the implementation of road tolls, which aimed to encourage investments in public transport networks. Transport officials believed that a comprehensive strategy, combining tolls and substantial investments, would effectively persuade residents to embrace greener modes of transport and reduce their reliance on personal vehicles.
Further supporting the green drive, a unique recycling initiative was launched last March. Commuters were rewarded with points for depositing plastic bottles in reverse-vending machines at Abu Dhabi's main bus terminal.
These points could then be redeemed for free public bus journeys. During the previous year, from March to November, approximately 70,000 plastic bottles were recycled through this program, contributing to the cause of environmental conservation.
Moreover, a strategic partnership between the Integrated Transport Centre and Arabia Taxi Transportation led to the introduction of five electric Tesla vehicles in March. The move aimed to reduce carbon emissions from vehicle exhausts, significantly improving air quality in the bustling city.
By replacing conventional taxis with eco-friendly alternatives, this collaboration aligns with the Integrated Transport Centre's vision of promoting environmentally friendly and sustainable transportation options, ultimately enhancing the overall quality of life in Abu Dhabi.
